The Great Hunger

Far away to the north, on the shores of the great ocean, the people of the Tlingit tribes had set up their homes. Once upon a time, a great famine fell upon all the land. It was a terrible time, and many people were weak from hunger. They sat wrapped in their blankets, waiting for the hard times to pass.
But there was one boy who would not sit down and give up. Day after day he took up his bow and arrows and went out into the frozen forest to seek food for his mother and himself.
One morning as he wandered in the forest, the boy found a strange little animal. It looked like a dog, yet not quite a dog. It was round, furry, and looked up at him with friendly eyes. The creature was shivering and clearly hungry, just like the boy.
