The Three Bears

The Porridge

Three bears walking in the woods while an old woman peeks at their house

Three bears walking in the woods while an old woman peeks at their house

Once upon a time there were Three Bears who lived in a house in the wood. One of them was a Wee Small Bear; and one was a Middle-sized Bear; and one was a Great Huge Bear. They each had a pot for their porridge: a little pot for the Wee Small Bear; a middle-sized pot for the Middle-sized Bear; and a big pot for the Great Huge Bear.

Now not far away there lived a little old woman. And when the Three Bears were settled in their house, all clean and neat and tidy, the little old woman came to call on them. But she was so dirty and cross and inquisitive that the Three Bears would have nothing to do with her: they did not ask her in, and they did not return her call.

One day, after they had made the porridge for their breakfast and poured it into their porridge-pots, she saw the Three Bears walk out into the wood. They were waiting for their porridge to cool as they did not wish to burn their mouths by eating it too hot. Directly they were out of sight, she popped in at the door, and went into the parlour.

"They never asked me to a meal, so I'll help myself!" thought the little old woman, and she tasted the porridge of the Great Huge Bear: but that was too hot for her. Then she tasted the porridge of the Middle-sized Bear: but that was too cold for her. Then she tasted the porridge of the Wee Small Bear, and it was just to her liking: so she ate it all up, and licked the pot.
